Community-Led Rural Housing Futures

Posted on 10 September 202519 January 2026

In March 2025, OHA participated in a Supervised Research Project led by the School of Urban Planning at McGill University. The project focused on Community-Led Housing (CLH) in rural areas and sought to understand the experiences of groups leading CLH development in non-metropolitan contexts, with particular attention to the needs of marginalized communities.

The research aimed to: identify which demographics and communities are currently being served by CLH models, and highlight promising pathways for scaling up and supporting CLH initiatives outside metropolitan areas. It examines the roles of co-operative housing, co-housing, and Community Land Trusts, while also exploring their potential and limitations in advancing more just, resilient, and community-led housing futures in rural regions.

The project has recently been published. Follow the link below to read the full report.
